MKS weekend November 13th - 3 games at College Settlement

Blackthornians,

Quick update on the men's game this past weekend.  It was a miserable, rainy drive on the way up to Wilkes Barre on the NE Extension, with multiple cars in the caravan to get us up there in time for an 11 am game.  The rain let up in time for the game, though.  The first half was a defensive struggle, featuring some incredible defense by Blackthorn near our try zone.  Blackthorn defenders rejected the Wilkes Barre attack time and time again.  Wilkes Barre did score a try at the 30 minute mark and the first half ended with the favored Breakers holding a 5-0 lead.  Blackthorn came back with 10 minutes gone in the second half with a penalty kick by Robbie Volrath to make the score 5-3.  However, WB put in 3 unanswered tries after that to take the match with a 22-3 score.  Man of the match went to flanker and defensive stalwart Jaron Ellison.  the side:  Walker, Walls, Petrilli, Hayes, Morton, Cliburn, Ellison, Umile, Johnson, Fillman, Kesse, Pearson, Faight, Golden, Vollrath.  Also seeing action were Fletcher, Andruskiewicz, Riddle, Wetere, and Porter.

Men's team with the home win

Fresh off a victory in Happy Valley, Blackthorn Men took the field this past Saturday against Harrisburg at our home field at John Russell Park.  It was another beautiful Fall day at kickoff in Elkins Park Pa.  Harrisburg struck early with a try in the first minute, but Blackthorn answered with a try of their own a short while later when Antoine Kesse scored his first ever try from his winger position.   None of the conversions were good however and the score was tied 5-5.  Harrisburg stormed back for another try and conversion, and a penalty kick, and Blackthorn answered with a penalty kick of their own by Rob Vollrath.  The half ended with the score 15-8 in favor of Harrisburg.

In the second half the momentum shifted to Blackthorn.  The Blackthorn forwards, led by Derick Morton Jr., stifled the Harrisburg attack.  Meanwhile, converted flanker Jaron Ellison broke free for 2 tries a few minutes apart to break open the contest.  Harrisburg managed only two penalty kicks in the second half.  Blackthorn continued scoring points with a try by speedy scrum half Jabari Johnson, and another breakaway try by the fleet footed Ellison, his third.  Vollrath had another penalty kick and the sure-footed fullback finished with two penalty kicks and 3 conversions.  Final score was 37-21 in favor of Blackthorn.

Man of the Match honors went to Derick Morton Jr.for his “lead by example” aggressive play on defense and in attack.

The side:  Phil Shank, Brandon Walker, Brendan Petrilli, Max Bluestein, Derick Morton, Jaron Ellison, Travis Cliburn, Vince Umile, Jabari Johnson, Gerald R. Fillman, Antoine Kesse, Jake Faight, Nick McShane, Ernest Pearson, Rob Vollrath.  Also seeing action were Quinn Lippman, Jack Wetere, Big Jim Andruskiewicz, Robbie Walls, and Blake Riddle.

This coming week is a bye week, and Blackthorn will travel to Wilkes Barre the following Saturday 30 October.

Men's team recap - week of October 10th

road trip win

Blackthorn Men traveled up to State College this past Saturday 15 as One in a large passenger van to take on the Happy Valley Barbarians.  The men in green made good on their goal to “score as many points as they could”, bringing home the W with a 40-34 victory.  The home and away teams traded punches all game long and in the end, the difference maker was X-factor Robbie “Money” Vollrath and his accurate foot.  Jabari Johnson and Jaron Ellison both scored two tries apiece, and Vince Umile and Rob Vollrath both tallied a try apiece.  Vollrath converted 5 of 6 kicks.  While there were a few solid candidates for Blackthorn man of the match among the scorers, the honor went to Jack Wetere.  Jack had bruised ribs yet traveled anyway, and played in pain the entire game while securing the scrum and banging away at the Happy Valley defense.  The post match social was held at Doggies Pub in State College, where the ruggers mixed in with the PSU students watching their Lions play Iowa.

The side:  Walker, Blake, Petrilli, Jack, Quinn, Travis, Phil, Derrick, Jabari, Zach, Porter, Vince, Jaron, Nick, Robbie.  Billy Freeman traveled from Bloomsburg to be our lone sub and played most of the second half to help seal the win.
