Fresh off a victory in Happy Valley, Blackthorn Men took the field this past Saturday against Harrisburg at our home field at John Russell Park. It was another beautiful Fall day at kickoff in Elkins Park Pa. Harrisburg struck early with a try in the first minute, but Blackthorn answered with a try of their own a short while later when Antoine Kesse scored his first ever try from his winger position. None of the conversions were good however and the score was tied 5-5. Harrisburg stormed back for another try and conversion, and a penalty kick, and Blackthorn answered with a penalty kick of their own by Rob Vollrath. The half ended with the score 15-8 in favor of Harrisburg.
In the second half the momentum shifted to Blackthorn. The Blackthorn forwards, led by Derick Morton Jr., stifled the Harrisburg attack. Meanwhile, converted flanker Jaron Ellison broke free for 2 tries a few minutes apart to break open the contest. Harrisburg managed only two penalty kicks in the second half. Blackthorn continued scoring points with a try by speedy scrum half Jabari Johnson, and another breakaway try by the fleet footed Ellison, his third. Vollrath had another penalty kick and the sure-footed fullback finished with two penalty kicks and 3 conversions. Final score was 37-21 in favor of Blackthorn.
Man of the Match honors went to Derick Morton Jr.for his “lead by example” aggressive play on defense and in attack.
